Mural + Video + Music = Walls are Dancing

I just love a great mural. And this is wonderful, because it brings together painting, and music, and video. The first clip is the actual result, the second is a "making of..." clip. Also with fabulous French-speaking people which is always nice. Enjoy!

The Creative Beast Learns Guitar: New Video!

Do you have a dream of something you want to learn or try or do?

A while back, Rick DiBiasion of middleagedcrazy.com sent me a little script telling the story of his dream to learn guitar.

I turned it over in my mind for a while.

Then, I asked Rick if he would send me a recording of him playing guitar - I could almost feel the trepidation from the other end, but eventually he did send something. I'm so glad, because it helps tell the story on a whole different level in concert with the drawings and the words.

Here is the result:

I hope this will inspire you to try something that you want to do. Your Creative Beast will thank you!

An Ipp, a Bad Day, and Non-Linear Storytelling

This is a non-linear tale of one Ipp's bad day. In my past as an information architect I tended to work my way from a central thought out to various "framing" thoughts, like spokes on a wheel (I call them mandalas).
That's what I'm doing here in this comic - from one angry Ipp in the center to the various reasons the Ipp is angry. Noise, customer service menus, being sick, bad stuff in the news. Together, they tell the story.
And yes, this is actually my bad day - and as I worked my way outward, I felt better. So I framed the whole thing with an "architecture" made up of peace, love, music and art.

BTALD: One-Hit Wonders

So, the B-52's just came out with a new album. I heard them interviewed about it, and they basically said, "Well, we still tour and we still play all the same songs and we figured we should have some new songs."

Anybody who's been to a concert knows the part where the first notes of some popular song come out and everyone cheers. I'm sure that's a rush if you're the one who wrote it.

But, jeez, what about after the 50th or 100th or 1,000th playing? Wow.

And then there's the music you hear at the store and stuff. I mean, does Sting realize that he's become the wallpaper of our life? I don't know.

I suppose walking to the mailbox for that royalty check makes it all okay.

But like the B-52's I'd sure be looking to write some new stuff. Just so my hands wouldn't freeze permanently in the chords for "Rock Lobster."

Or, you can just go off the deep end like Michael Jackson - I don't suppose too many people bug him to sing "Beat It" these days. Just guessing.

That's not MY beeping blipping thing.

Riding the train this week, I noticed that I'm not noticing something.
Namely, the various bleeps and bloops and little tiny versions of hit songs that emit from all over the place.
That used to be a real attention-getter. Now, nobody cares. People just erupt in blips and bloops all the time. It's like... gas.
A contractor at my house this week kept having Michael Jackson sing from his shirt pocket.
My phone has this kind of house-trip-hop groove it plays when I have a call, which I don't really realize is a call for a good 15 seconds or so. Then it has the happy "You have a message, happy happy joy joy" song it plays after I've missed whatever call it was.
Next time you're in a public place, just close your eyes and listen for electronic gobbledygook. It's pretty interesting. And, every so often you'll hear a snippet of some song you haven't heard in years, and then you can go download that and listen to the whole thing on Napster.
Like, Michael Jackson.
